4.     modelspoorbouw in schaal N

Who is the PH&LF RailRoad Association

The main goal of the PH&LF RailRoad Association is building a modelrailroad based upon North-American prototype in N Scale (1:160) according to the oNetrak-, twiNtrak- and Ntrak standards (American modular system). This is our main goal, but we also have some other goals:

·          Enjoying modelrailroading with others

·          To participate in modelrailroad shows in the Netherlands and abroad.

·          Together with other Ntrakkies put up a layout three of four times a year.

·          Exchange of skills and knowledge of the North American (model)Railroading.

The members of the PH&LF have at least five characteristics in common:

1.     the love for North-American railroading

2.     modelrailroading as a hobby

3.     the wish to built modules according to North american prototype based upon oNetrak, Ntrak and/or TwinTrak standard

4.     N scale modelrailroading

5.     the wish to share the modelrailroading hobby with others

If you can check the five boxes, chances are that you could be a PH&LF member.

The PH&LF RailRoad Association started in the Haarlem, Netherlands, region with four modelrailroad enthousiasts on July 6 2001. All four wanted to start a North American modelrailroad in N scale. As some of them allready had a H0 scale layout at home or had a lack of space at home, they decided to built modules according to the Ntrak standards

The big advantages of modules is that everyone can built seperatly their pasrt of the modular layout, but at the same time.

Today, the PH&LF has members all over the Netherlands in the provinces of Drenthe, Groningen, Gelderland, Noord-Holland, Utrecht en Zuid-Holland. Besides the fact that the PH&LF is an informal club which makes modules, it is also a platform for fans of North American (model)railroading. The PH&LF doesn't have its own meeting place, but gathers in larger or smaller settings at one of the members houses on a regular basis. At least four times a year a meeting takes place where the members can show their modules in a layout together with other non-members. This can be at public shows or a more "privat"show

Membership of the PH&LF is € 15,00 a year. We want to keep the fees low, the PH&LF prefers that the money is spend on the hobby rather then the fees. If you are interested, please let us know.

Waarom modulebouw?

Why the modular concept?

The main reasons for module construction are:

·         No or limited space at home for a permanent layout.

·         The opportunity to work with others, to set up a big layout that wouldn't be possible at home.

·         As a (small) project alongside a current layout at home. You can choose a different railroad company / country without having to build a complete new layout.

·         Being able to present your layout to others elsewhere.

·         Flexibility: The layout can be different every time it is set up.

·         You can build individual but you can share experiences with or consult fellow modelrailroaders within the club.

Waarom Noord-Amerikaanse Spoorwegen?

·        Rollend materieel, typisch Noord-Amerikaans: groter, breder, langer.

Why North American Railroads?

The North American railroads have several interesting points that sets them apart from European railways:

·          Rolling stock, typical North American: bigger, wider, longer.

·          Train compositions, trains with more than 100 cars are no exception.

·          The North American landscape offers variety, from forest to prairies and from villages to skyscrapers

·          With the N-scale modules, driving long trains is easier to achieve than in other scales.

Voorbeelden daarvan zijn o.a.

Overigens is daar niets mis mee.

What is Ntrak?

Ntrak is a modular modelrailroad standard in N scale with 99.9% of the modules representing North american railroading. Ntrak was introduced in the late 70s and early 80s by the NMRA Netherlands Contact Group in the Netherlands. These modules were based on the Ntrak standards (see www.ntrak.org) which originated  from the United States (California) in the year 1973.
The modular system in the Netherlands has developed strongly in subsequent years. Examples are e.g. Nedtrak and M-Track. On the major modelrailroading events in the Netherlands such as Eurospoor in Utrecht and Rail in Den Bosch, Leiden en Houten , many national and international modelrailroading clubs put up modular layouts. These layouts mainly respresent Dutch, German and Swiss railroads.

A very important point in module construction is of course the standardization of dimensions and electrical connections. There have been a couple of developments in this area. In the Netherlands e.g. the Ntrak standard evolved into the Nedtrak standard and with this change the American prototype changed into Dutch and German railroads which are modeled. Off course, there is nothing wrong with that. However, the Dutch Ntrak division with the American railroads as subject  disappeared over the years. The PH&LF started on July 6 2001 to reintroduce Ntrak in the Netherlands and did this successfully as can be seen on this website. In addition, the PH&LF oNetrak and twiNtrak standard introduced in the Netherlands.

The reason the PH&LF choose for the Ntrak standards is obviously a conscious choice. The supporters of the Ntrak standards have all North American railroads as an example and thus enhances the possibility to set up modular layouts together with other (foreign) organizations or individuals with Ntrak modules.

The PH&LF has participated in meetings of Ntrak Germany several times .
